Tom Jones is an artist who finds his inspiration in his Eastern Shore surroundings.  Waterfowl, song birds, hunting dogs, marsh and river all provide subject matter for his work.

A 1974 graduate of the University of Maryland, Tom earned a B.S. in Art Education.  He accepted a teaching position with the Maryland public school system in Dorchester County, where he spent seven years guiding the talents of young artists.  In 1981, he resigned his teaching position and devoted himself to painting full time.

Tom's mediums include acrylic, watercolors and oils.  Solid drawings provide the basis for his paintings.  Translucent colors are slowly added to the drawing until the form is firmly established.  The detail is given to the form through hours of careful painting with fine brushes.

Tom's compositions are the result of careful planning - each element must create balance within the visual space.  He begins with abstract forms, which add strength and dimension to the work.  "The planning stage is the tough part," he says.  "All that follows will only be as strong as the foundation I have established in the beginning step."
